Project description

"When they catch you, they deport you. 60 to 80 people per truck. The tarpaulin is kept shut, so you cannot see where they are bringing you. Somewhere in the Algerian desert, without water or food. Pregnant women, injured people, children, they do not care at all. Then you have to wait for nightfall. If you're lucky, you can see lights and you follow their direction. But if you’re injured or if you get lost, it’s over. Many of my buddies died of thurst in the desert, the pockets full of cash. That’s why we live on the roofs. Through the city we move just at night."
Derek, Nigeria, in Tanger

Currently there are worldwide more than 50 million people on the flight.

The photo/filmproject "displaced - Refugees on Europe´s Borders" consists in three parts and documents human rights conditions at the European outer borders from the Ivory Coast to Burkina Faso and Morocco, from the Ukraine to Italy, France and Germany. In moving portraits and interviews the works gives a voice to all those who, in their flight from hunger, poverty, civil war and violence, got stuck at the frontiers, outside the gateways to Europe.

Two documentary films are existing to accompany the exhibition. Also the film screenings, as well as discussions with the author can be booked with us.

"Au clair de la lune ..."
This search for opinions from the other side of the curtain leads Leona Goldstein from Western-Africa up to the southern European border. There she interviews deported refugees, human rights activists, and artists about their visions on the "Utopia Europe".
Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Mali, Morocco, 2005/2006, DV, 40 minutes

"Le Heim" – asylum reality in Germany
The home for asylum seekers Waldsieversdorf is difficult to find. 60 kilometers east of Berlin, it is situated completely isolated in the middle of the woods. There Leona Goldstein talks to refugees from Iraq, Vietnam, and Cameroun about their hopes before they fled to Germany, as well as about the realities that they are facing here.
Germany, 2005, DV, 16 minutes
